Beyond Benefits: Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile Program
One of the most comprehensive school-based sealant programs in the country is right here in Wisconsin. For the past five years, Delta Dental has teamed with the state of Wisconsin to fund Seal-A-Smile (SAS), a school-based dental sealant program. Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin manages the program in collaboration with the Department of Health Services. The result: a significant expansion of sealant-based programs across 61 (out of 72) counties in Wisconsin.
The primary objective of the Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile program is to reduce the incidence of dental caries and other oral-health problems among school-age children in vulnerable segments of the population.
The latest results of the SAS program are impressive. The number of children screened dramatically increased and the number of children with untreated dental decay decreased from 40.8% to 18.4% during the past eight years. More than 22,000 children will receive sealants this school year through Seal-A-Smile.
One of Delta Dental of Wisconsin’s missions is to improve the oral health of children. The data-collection phase of the project ensures that results can be captured, measured, and benchmarked. The collaboration between the state of Wisconsin, Children’s Health Alliance, and Delta Dental enables many school-age children to receive sealants who would not otherwise receive oral care.
